Studio Vural was hired by the Marmara Manhattan Hotel, a prominent hotel chain based in Istanbul, to submit design options for their rooms. This is a study we made for the remodeling of a prototypical room which will go under constrcuction in 2012. We worked with the concept of Lamassu, which is man headed lion, or an eagle winged man, or some other combination of a power symbolizing animal and man.
This concept was very applicaple to Marmara Manhattan which is a Turkish hotel chain, expanding in New York, serving people from hundreds of countries; a quintessential post-modern condition. The client wanted to look New York without abondoning their established identity, which was also a very matching condition for the Lamassu. In a global culture, arent we all Lamassu's anyway? In our design we explored this concept by blending different and conflicting materials / interior elements into a harmonious and at times disjuncted whole. A pulp-fiction if you will, of architectural zpazanga. Design explorations are still ongoing and we are hoping to start construciton soon.
